Why a site about prayer?

The purpose of this site is to encourage us to each go deeper in our prayer life. One way that we do that is by praying together. Another way we do that is by praying individually yet collectively on the same prayer themes. Our hope is that as we share prayers and reflect on them and pray over them at the same time in our individual lives, the Holy Spirit will speak to each of us and allow us to encourage and edify one another in prayer.

The Valley of Vision

Introductory prayer from "The Valley of Vision", a collection of Puritan prayers and devotionals compiled and edited by Arthur Bennett

LORD, HIGH AND HOLY, MEEK AND LOWLY,

Thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.

Let me learn by paradox
   that the way down is the way up,
   that to be low is to be high,
   that the broken heart is the healed heart,
   that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
   that the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
   that to have nothing is to possess all,
   that to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
   that to give is to receive,
   that the valley is the place of vision.

Lord, in the daytime stars can be seen from deepest wells,
and the deeper the wells the brighter thy stars shine;
Let me find thy light in my darkness,
                           thy life in my death,
                           thy joy in my sorrow,
                           thy grace in my sin,
                           thy riches in my poverty
                           thy glory in my valley.

  1. Let me find thy light in my darkness, thy life in my death, thy joy in my sorrow, thy grace in my sin, thy riches in my poverty thy glory in my valley.

    My dark is not dark to you. Help me, Lord, to not fear the darkness but to trust that you are with me in it. You are faithful and you are good.

  4. Father, you are worthy. Son, you are worthy. Spirit, you are worthy. You have brought me to the value vision where I live in the depths but see you in the Heights. You are there.

  5. valley of vision, not value vision. But I'm going to let that autocorrect stand. I trust, Lord, there is meaning to that phrase: you have brought me to the value vision.

  6. You are bright, Jesus. You are rich. You are high and lifted up. As I get lower in posture, may I keep my eyes fixed on you in the heights. As I empty myself of the things of this life, may I fill myself with the riches of your Word. Keep my eyes fixed on you alone, Jesus.

  7. The darkness is not dark to you. You are lights. My darkness does not overwhelm you. You are there and you are light and you are life. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

  9. Father help me to embrace the paradox of your kingdom. Help me to embrace that the way down is the way up, that to be low is to be high, that the broken heart is the healed heart, that the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit. This is not natural to my human flesh. Grow me, deepen my faith. I want to trust your ways.
