Why a site about prayer?

The purpose of this site is to encourage us to each go deeper in our prayer life. One way that we do that is by praying together. Another way we do that is by praying individually yet collectively on the same prayer themes. Our hope is that as we share prayers and reflect on them and pray over them at the same time in our individual lives, the Holy Spirit will speak to each of us and allow us to encourage and edify one another in prayer.

Litany of Humility

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.
From the desire of being esteemed,
Deliver me, Jesus. (repeat after each line)

From the desire of being loved,
From the desire of being extolled,
From the desire of being honored,
From the desire of being praised,
From the desire of being preferred to others,
From the desire of being consulted,
From the desire of being approved,
From the fear of being humiliated,
From the fear of being despised,
From the fear of suffering rebukes,
From the fear of being calumniated,
From the fear of being forgotten,
From the fear of being ridiculed,
From the fear of being wronged,
From the fear of being suspected,

That others may be loved more than I,
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. (repeat after each line)

That others may be esteemed more than I ,
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease,
That others may be chosen and I set aside,
That others may be praised and I unnoticed,
That others may be preferred to me in everything,
That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should

Litany of Humility was composed by Rafael Cardinal Merry de Val (1865-1930) and is published by the Catholic Church.

**When the litany of humility is prayed in a private setting by two or more people, the lines given in italics below are the responses to a leader.

Jesus grant me the grace to desire that others may be chosen, praised, preferred and esteemed more than I am in this world.

  2. Jesus, these words cut me like a knife. My sin exposed. Deliver me from pride and grant me true grace towards all people you have put in my path. Help me, I am broken. Amen

  3. As I read this prayer, I feel my self being wounded with each line. Ouch!! But Jesus you came to slay my self, to crucify it. It hurts as it dies!! But Jesus, please do it in me. When I ask you for true humility, I barely know what I'm asking for, but THIS prayer is it. I will simply stay close to you, my gentle, loving heart surgeon. Make me humble, completely forgetting self, I want it.
